Iran Withdraws from 2026 World Cup After Leader’s Death

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Iranian Ministry of Sports announced that the national football team will withdraw from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The decision follows recent dramatic events in Iran and the wider region.

The withdrawal poses a significant challenge for FIFA, which must find a replacement for one of Asia’s top teams just three months before the tournament begins.

The decision comes after coordinated attacks by the United States and Israel resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several high-ranking officials. The situation was further escalated by Iranian missile strikes on U.S. allies, including Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali stressed that team participation is impossible under these circumstances.

At the time of withdrawal, Team Melli ranked 20th in the FIFA rankings and was considered one of Asia’s strongest sides. Key players include forward Mehdi Taremi (Olympiacos), Sardar Azmoun, and Alireza Jahanbakhsh, all of whom will now miss the tournament.

The question of a replacement team has not yet been resolved. Historically, such last-minute withdrawals are extremely rare. The closest precedent occurred at Euro 1992, when Yugoslavia was replaced by Denmark just two weeks before the tournament due to war and sanctions.

Potential replacements for Iran may include one of the highest-ranked teams from the Asian qualifiers, possibly Russia, but no official decision has been made.

Iran had been drawn into Group G alongside New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt. FIFA now faces the urgent task of filling the vacant spot and ensuring smooth tournament operations.
