India Forms Parliamentary Friendship Group with Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — India’s top legislative body has officially announced the creation of the India-Uzbekistan Parliamentary Friendship Group, Dunyo news agency reported.

The initiative reflects the ongoing strengthening of strategic ties between the two countries, which in recent years have expanded across key sectors, including the economy, high technology, and cultural-humanitarian exchanges.

The group was established at the initiative of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, with the lower house secretariat passing a resolution to launch the parliamentary structure. Its membership includes representatives from both houses of Parliament — the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha — encompassing lawmakers from the ruling coalition and opposition. Ganesh Singh, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, was appointed as head of the group.

The formation of the group follows agreements reached during Om Birla’s 2025 visit to Uzbekistan, where the Indian delegation participated in the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Tashkent and was received by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Senate Chair Tanzila Narbayeva.

The group will deepen direct dialogue between lawmakers, facilitate the exchange of legislative and governance experience, support joint economic, educational, cultural, and humanitarian initiatives, and promote long-term strategic partnership projects between Tashkent and New Delhi.

Experts note that creating a permanent parliamentary platform underscores Uzbekistan’s role as a key partner for India in Central Asia and provides a reliable framework for strengthening people-to-people ties, fostering educational programs, and enhancing tourism exchanges.
