In August-September 2021, onions and garlic were planted on 88,000 hectares of agricultural land in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- In August - September 2021, work was carried out in Uzbekistan to plant onions and garlic on a total area of 88,200 hectares in all categories of farms. This figure for the country this year is 5,800 hectares higher than last year, or 7% compared to the same period last year. It should be noted that this year, these areas are mainly planted with high-yielding and export-oriented onion varieties.

The expected harvest in 2022 based on the planting results in August-September, as well as in late autumn by the "tuksonbosti" method, will be: onion - 2 million tons, garlic - 623 thousand tons.

“One of the main advantages of planting onions and garlic in August-September and late autumn using the ‘tuksonbosti’ method is getting the harvest early. In 2022, in the spring, this will make it possible to timely provide the population of the republic with a fresh harvest, as well as gain an export advantage with early deliveries of onions and garlic to foreign markets in March-April, before many other countries do it. An early harvest of onions and garlic begins to ripen in March in the Surkhandarya region,” said Bekzod Nuriddinov, head of the department of vegetable growing, melon growing and potatoes of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

At the end of 2020, the export of fresh onions amounted to 210.2 thousand tons in the amount of US$34.3 million, as well as dried onions - 10.6 thousand tons in the amount of 2.6 million dollars. Export of garlic amounted to 2.1 thousand tons per the amount of US$1.8 million

In order to save water resources, the technology of drip irrigation was introduced when planting onions. As a result, fertilizers are used more efficiently, saving up to 40% of water. In addition, according to experts, these measures should lead to higher yields.

Also, this year, for each region, based on the soil and climatic conditions, recommendations have been developed on agricultural techniques for the placement and cultivation of onions and garlic planted in August-September. These measures are taken in accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan from 15 October 2020 (No. PP 4863) "On measures to increase the production and export of garlic and vegetable products by the" tuksonbosti "method.
