Illegal Gold Smuggling from Kyrgyzstan Stopped in Namangan Region

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Officers from the Border Troops, the Department of State Security Service for Namangan Region, and law enforcement agencies have prevented an attempt to illegally import gold from Kyrgyzstan into Uzbekistan.

According to available information, a 29-year-old resident of the Kasansay District, following instructions from his 37-year-old uncle, crossed the state border and brought into the country gold bars weighing a total of 1 kg 168 g. The young man was detained while handing over the precious metal to another relative living in the same district.

The estimated value of the seized gold is approximately 1.1 billion soums.

A criminal case has been opened under Paragraphs “a” and “b” of Part 2 of Article 182 (violation of customs regulations on a particularly large scale through open, unauthorized movement of valuables across the border) and Paragraph “b” of Part 2 of Article 223 (illegal entry into Uzbekistan by prior conspiracy of a group of persons) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

An investigation is underway.
