IAEA to support the improvement of knowledge and experience of specialists of Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 2-5 March, the State Industrial Safety Committee and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) hold a national workshop on the culture of nuclear safety in practice. This was reported by the State Committee for Industrial Safety of Uzbekistan

The event is being organized to support national efforts to maintain a high level of nuclear security culture.

With the spread of nuclear technology in the world, the task of protecting the world community from a nuclear catastrophe and from nuclear terrorism is becoming increasingly relevant.

The goal of nuclear safety is to prevent radiation and nuclear accidents, and the goal of nuclear security is to prevent deliberate actions that could harm a nuclear installation or could lead to theft or theft of nuclear materials.

The IAEA has confirmed 560 cases since 1993 of the unauthorized use of isotope devices worldwide. In order to counter these challenges, operating organizations of nuclear facilities, regulatory authorities and international organizations pay increased attention to ensuring adequate physical safety at facilities using radioactive and nuclear materials.

Nuclear security is an important element in the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and in countering the possibility of nuclear terrorism and contributes to the safe development of nuclear energy. The organization and implementation of an appropriate nuclear security system within the jurisdiction is the responsibility of the state itself.

An in-depth analysis of a number of radiation and nuclear accidents showed that one of the main root causes of accidents is deficiencies in the field of nuclear safety culture and physical safety culture.

The objectives of the national workshop are:

1) the achievement and maintenance of a high level of culture of nuclear security of the heads of regulatory bodies and nuclear facilities, their personnel and specialists;

2) ensuring the availability of effective means of protection against potential danger in the course of the use of atomic energy;

3) prevention, detection and counteraction of theft, sabotage, unauthorized access, illegal movement and other criminal acts in relation to nuclear material, other radioactive substances or related facilities.

The seminar will bring together leading IAEA experts and competent persons in the field of nuclear security and more than 40 representatives of the ministries and departments of our republic. The training seminar includes reports and discussions, practical exercises aimed at improving the knowledge and experience of specialists of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Based on the results of participation, the participants of this seminar are expected to receive the relevant certificates.

According to the results of the workshop, it is expected:

- self-esteem and improvement of the nuclear and physical safety culture both for the state and for organizations responsible for ensuring safety;

- increasing knowledge, improving managerial and leadership qualities of personnel of regulatory bodies and nuclear facilities;

- The peaceful use of nuclear energy in our country.
