Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A videoconference was held in the US capital with the vice president of the St. Petersburg Medical Research Institute Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Inc. Carlos Rodriguez-Galindo, dedicated to the treatment of COVID-19 in children with cancer, reports Dunyo news agency.
Hospital St. Jude (the city of Mumphys, Tennessee) is one of the leading pediatric medical research institutions specializing in the treatment of various types of cancer among children. Since its inception, the medical institution has been able to increase the survival rate of children with cancer from 20 to 80 percent
During the event, representatives of the diplomatic mission of our country spoke about measures taken in the republic against the spread of coronavirus. The parties exchanged views on the treatment of COVID-19 in children diagnosed with cancer, and also discussed promising areas of cooperation.
Vice-President R. Galindo congratulated the leadership of Uzbekistan on achieving success in reducing the growth rate of coronavirus infection. He emphasized that strict quarantine restrictions undertaken by the country are the only correct method to contain the epidemiological background in such cases of unknown infectious diseases.
As noted by the American doctor, his medical institution also took firm restrictive measures against the spread of coronavirus. In particular, a constant regimen for controlling the symptoms of the disease was introduced, employees are equipped with personal protective equipment, and are tested for infection at least once every four days.
At the same time, according to the clinic, three cases of coronavirus infection were detected in hospital patients. However, as noted by R. Galindo, all patients suffered the disease with virtually no symptoms and complications. A similar situation, according to the vice president, is observed in many children’s institutions, which indicates the ability of the children’s immune system to cope with the infection on its own.
As a result of the videoconference, the parties agreed to provide free consultative and expert assistance in the formation of the domestic system of pediatric oncology in such areas as improving the professional qualifications of oncologists in Uzbekistan, introducing early warning, diagnosis and timely cancer treatment programs for children in the educational system of higher medical educational institutions , organizing on a regular basis counseling assistance in the treatment of children with cancer and others.
In addition, a preliminary seminar on pediatric hematology and oncology will be held in Tashkent earlier this fall with the participation of leading experts from the United States, Russia and Belarus. This event will serve as a platform for the exchange of best practices and modern methods of treating cancer in children, and the development of consolidated solutions for their implementation in national oncology systems.
In May last year, the delegation of St. Jude led by R. Galindo in Uzbekistan, in the framework of which meetings and negotiations were held with the leadership of the Ministry of Health and the Republican Specialized Center for Oncology and Radiology, local clinics and research institutions were visited.
In October 2019, representatives of St. Jude, together with WHO, organized a three-day workshop on the effective treatment of pediatric oncology in Tashkent with the participation of about 100 experts from abroad with financial and organizational support from the American clinic.
