Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) – On 22 June 2021, the visit of the Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Martin Chungong is taking place for the first time in Uzbekistan.
On the first day of his visit, the Secretary General of the Interparliamentary Union met with the Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Speaker of the Legislative Chamber. The distinguished guest took part in the youth parliamentary forum "Let’s support youth in parliament" in the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis.
It is also planned that Martin Chungong will take part in the International Forum "Interparliamentary Global Cooperation in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals", which will be held in Bukhara on 23-24 June.
It is expected that on June 25, the head of an influential international organization will participate in a parliamentary forum on the role of parliament in ensuring interethnic harmony and interreligious tolerance, which will be held in Samarkand with the participation of the general public and religious leaders.
Martin Chungong is the eighth Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, a prestigious international organization with more than 130 years of history. He is the first non-European specialist to rise to such a high position in the history of this Organization.
Martin Chungong is a Cameroonian international politician with 40 years of experience in the parliamentary system at the national and international levels. Has a linguistic education, is a professor at the Universities of Yaounde (Cameroon) and Ottawa (Canada). He is fluent in English, French and Spanish.
Martin Chungong highly appreciates the reforms being carried out in Uzbekistan, including the development of parliamentarism, support for youth, gender equality and the improvement of the situation of stateless persons. He was one of the first leaders of international organizations who supported the initiative of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev to adopt a UN General Assembly resolution "On achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and enhancing the role of parliaments in ensuring human rights."
In August 2020, Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Martin Chungong took part in the Samarkand Forum on Human Rights, which was held online.
