Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 23 and 24 September 2025, the Gorky State Academic Russian Drama Theater from Astana will present a series of performances at the Tashkent State Theater of Musical Comedy, the theater’s press service reports.
This year, the theater, the oldest dramatic institution in Kazakhstan’s capital, celebrates its 125th theatrical season.
Founded in 1899, the Gorky Theater holds a special place in the cultural life of Astana and the country as a whole. Over its more than century-long history, it has become a true school of acting and stage culture, where classical works coexist with contemporary theatrical forms. Today, the theater actively participates in international festivals, tours abroad, and remains one of Kazakhstan’s leading theatrical ensembles.
During the Tashkent tour, the theater will present three productions suitable for audiences of all ages. On 23 and 24 September at 11:00 a.m., the stage will host T. Ufimtseva’s fairy tale “The Nutcracker”, directed by Honored Artist of the Republic of Kazakhstan Lyudmila Kryuchkova.
This dramatic interpretation of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s world-famous story explores themes of kindness, inner beauty, and devotion. Audiences can expect brilliant acting, vibrant sets, exquisite costumes, and magical stage transformations.
On the evening of 23 September at 6:30 p.m., the theater will present a contemporary staging of A.S. Pushkin’s “Eugene Onegin. Scenes from the Novel. Our Days” in a new adaptation by Y. Kvyatkovsky (Moscow). The production offers a bold attempt to view Onegin and Tatyana through the lens of the 21st century: the classic text is intertwined with modern visual imagery, music, and videoblogging elements, while preserving the poetic structure of the original. This production is supported by the Russian Ministry of Culture and the NGO “Russian Seasons” on the 225th anniversary of Pushkin’s birth.
On 24 September at 6:30 p.m., audiences will enjoy the comedy “Monsieur Jourdain – Velvet Emptiness”, based on Jean-Baptiste Molière’s play “The Bourgeois Gentleman”, directed by Tufan Imamutdinov (Kazan).
This modern interpretation of the classic satire tells the story of a man striving for external success and recognition, yet not without self-irony. The performance is rich in music, movement, and sharp humor, highlighting the timeless tension between illusion and reality.
