Gold Worth 2 bln Soums Seized at Kyrgyz Border

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Law enforcement authorities in Uzbekistan’s Ferghana region have prevented an attempt to illegally export gold from the country.

The operation was carried out by officers of the regional department of the State Security Service in cooperation with customs authorities.

The incident occurred at the Vodil-Auto border customs post on the border with Kyrgyzstan. A Damas vehicle driven by a 1996-born resident of Fergana district was stopped while attempting to leave the country.

During an inspection of the vehicle, officers discovered four concealed gold bars hidden inside the cargo compartment.

According to an expert examination, the total net weight of the seized precious metal was 1.232 kg. The value of the gold is estimated at 2 billion 182 million 466 thousand soums.

A criminal case has been opened under paragraph “a”, Part 2 of Article 182 of the Criminal Code of Uzbekistan, which предусматривает ответственность за нарушение таможенного законодательства в особо крупном размере. The investigation is currently ongoing.
