Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan and Germany have diverged in their approaches to Afghanistan. German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock is visiting Uzbekistan.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan Vladimir Norov held talks with Annalena Burbock.
Annalena Burbock made several statements at a briefing following talks with Vladimir Norov on Afghanistan.
She noted that after the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan, life for Uzbekistan remains difficult.
“After all, the hotbed of crises is right at your doorstep. Since last summer, the Taliban have denied women the right to education and freedom. That is why Afghans live in fear, because living and surviving are two different things,” she said.
Burbock stated that the German government has now decided to transport thousands of people through Uzbekistan to Germany every month. First of all, it will be the Afghan citizens who are under the most pressure, she added. This issue was discussed during negotiations with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan Vladimir Norov.
In turn, Vladimir Norov noted that Uzbekistan is helping Afghanistan and is working to establish peace there and prevent a humanitarian crisis.
The Uzbek Foreign Minister said that the international community should help return Afghan assets frozen abroad and restore infrastructure there.
Annalena Burbock stated that she did not agree with the position of Uzbekistan on this issue. She noted that Germany opposes the actions of the current Afghan government.
“We have no right to leave the citizens of Afghanistan to their fate, and we will not do it. In recent months, we have been witnessing a crisis and the situations that are taking place there. Winter is coming and it will bring its own problems. The German government will continue to help the people in Afghanistan. We highly appreciate and welcome the work of Uzbekistan in Afghanistan,” she said.
At the same time, she stressed that Germany and Uzbekistan have different views on this issue. Germany believes that the Taliban have stolen people’s freedom in Afghanistan, he said.
