Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) continues a series of trainings aimed at promoting innovative agricultural methods at the household level in the Aral Sea region. On March 9-11, 2022 together with the Rural Women Association the workshops on horticulture and water-saving technologies were carried out in Kungrad district of Karakalpakstan that brought together rural vulnerable groups in order to teach them to productively use the land resources and increase the income of the rural households.
The trainings were organized as part of a Joint Programme implemented by United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and FAO aimed at strengthening adaptive capacity of vulnerable citizens of the Aral Sea region to address the difficulties of economic and food insecurity. The Joint Programme is funded by the UN Multi-Partner Human Security Trust Fund for the Aral Sea Region in Uzbekistan.
During the trainings on horticulture rural people acquired skills on efficient use of degraded lands, mineral and organic fertilizers and agricultural technologies in horticulture on saline soils of household plots. The training on water-saving technologies covered topics such as the introduction of drip irrigation technologies in personal plots, irrigation methods using flexible mobile pipes and other issues of rational use of water resources. In addition, the participants were acquainted with the benefits available in Uzbekistan for those who introduce water-saving technologies in their household plots.
According to the stakeholders, support for women, engaging young people in agriculture will contribute to a more dynamic development of the agro-industrial complex and more sustainable production as well as will enhance socio-economic development of the Aral Sea region.
