DP World to Modernize Key Border Crossings in Afghanistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — DP World has signed a landmark agreement with the Government of Afghanistan to develop and manage the strategic border crossings of Torkham and Hairatan.

These crossings serve as vital trade arteries for the country, linking Afghanistan with neighboring states and facilitating multi-billion-dollar commodity flows.

The agreement is structured as a public-private partnership (PPP) and includes comprehensive technical and financial assessments prior to concession approval. The project envisions modernizing infrastructure, implementing advanced cargo handling systems, and digitizing border processes to enhance the efficiency, security, and reliability of cross-border trade.

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, CEO of DP World, emphasized the project’s significance: “Efficient trade corridors are the foundation of economic resilience. Modernizing Torkham and Hairatan will unlock Afghanistan’s potential and create new opportunities for a stable and prosperous future in the region.”

The project will also support job creation for the local population, foster professional skills development, and encourage close cooperation with national partners.

The Afghan government will retain control over sovereign border functions, including customs, immigration, and security, while working alongside DP World to ensure the seamless operation of the crossings.
