Deputy Hokim Calls Tashkent EV Station Shutdown a “Loss”
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Abdurahmon Bakhtiev, deputy hokim of Tashkent for transport and road infrastructure, described the temporary shutdown of several electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the capital as a “loss for all,” affecting both station operators and EV owners.
Bakhtiev explained that installing a charging station on city land requires participation in an electronic auction to acquire a plot. Many of the disabled stations are on state land and did not pay for its use, as the plots were not officially purchased, prompting the shutdown.
He noted that operators often use neighboring property cadastral numbers to obtain permits, which distorts data and reduces city revenue.
The deputy hokim stressed that the shutdowns were a necessary measure due to increased electricity demand during winter and summer. Discussions with operators on solutions are ongoing.
City authorities are updating regulations and studying international practices, including cooperation with the World Bank, which is implementing a project to simplify EV station permitting.
Last week, the hokimiyat reported “numerous” violations, including stations directly connecting to transformers without accounting for current loads and projected household consumption, resulting in the temporary disconnection of 101 stations.
Authorities stated they are ready for constructive dialogue with businesses, provided legal requirements are met.
