Dedicated BRT Lanes Totalling 58 km to Be Introduced in Tashkent by 2030

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Large-scale construction of dedicated Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lanes continues in Tashkent to enhance the efficiency and speed of public transport.

According to the project presented to the President of Uzbekistan, the total length of the specialized infrastructure will reach approximately 58 kilometers. The project will be implemented in four stages. The first BRT corridors will appear along Shota Rustaveli, Shakhrisabz, Amir Temur, and Yangi Sergeli streets.

By 2030, additional BRT lanes will be established along Maxtumquli, Mirzo Ulugbek–Feruza–Yuzirabad, Lutfiy, Muqimiy, Nurafshon, Qaratosh–Kukcha Darvoza streets, as well as along the Kichik Halqa Avtomobil Yo‘li (Small Ring Road)–Parkent route.

By that time, nine more dedicated corridors will be opened on key streets and avenues, including Shakhrisabz Street (from Mirabad to Amir Temur Avenue), Amir Temur Avenue (from Shakhrisabz Street to Rixsili Street, Yunusabad Ring), and Yangi Sergeli Street. Lanes will also be built on Maxtumquli Street (from Sadiq Azimov to Mirzo Ulugbek), as well as on sections of Mirzo Ulugbek, Feruza, and Yuzrabot Streets (from Maxtumquli to the TTZ district).

Further expansions are planned along Lutfiy and Muqimiy Streets (from the Ring Road to Shota Rustaveli), Nurafshon Street (from Muqimiy in the Aktepa area to Beruniy Avenue near Tinchlik metro station), and on Qaratosh and Kukcha Darvoza Streets (from Friendship of Peoples Square to Beshqayragach Street near the Kukcha Mosque). The final segment will connect the Southern Railway Station with Maxtumquli and Temur Malik Streets via a three-level interchange along the Small Ring Road and Parkent Street.

The total investment in the project is estimated at around US$110 million.

Previously, the BRT system was introduced along Shota Rustaveli Street. The $19.2 million project increased passenger flow from 2,500 to 6,000 people per hour, while road capacity reached 40,000 vehicles per day.

The average traffic speed rose from 23 to 30 kilometers per hour, significantly improving safety and reducing the number of traffic accidents.

As part of the reconstruction, 21 new bus stops and 463 “smart” traffic lights were installed, alongside the introduction of an intelligent transport system.

Additional infrastructure improvements included new parking areas, bicycle lanes, green spaces, irrigation and drainage systems — all of which enhanced comfort and safety across the city’s transport network.
