Day without a car in Tashkent to be held in cooperation with the EU

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan supports “Day without a car” campaign, which has been organized all over the world as various projects throughout the country are implemented on the third Friday of each month. This was discussed at a meeting in the khokimiyat of the city of Tashkent, which was attended by employees of the diplomatic mission of the European Union in Uzbekistan.

The idea itself arose spontaneously in the early 1970s, when for the first time Switzerland decided to abandon cars for four days because of the fuel crisis. And the tradition to celebrate the “Day without a car” on 22 September was founded in 1997 in England. A year later, it was supported in France. And by 2000, states around the world gradually joined the campaign, and today it is supported by 54 countries. This was noted at the meeting by the head of the EU cooperation department, Francois Bejo, and expressed great interest in attracting Uzbekistan to this action.

For our country, the problem of an increasing number of cars in cities is no less relevant. The presence of personal vehicles, of course, provides comfort and mobility of movement, but still is one of the main factors in the destruction of the atmosphere. In a state in which a healthy lifestyle is actively promoted, of course, the idea is supported. Moreover, on the third Friday of each month, various events are being implemented that advocate spending your day without a personal car.

The deputy khokim of the city of Tashkent, Elbek Shukurov, stressed that Uzbekistan started work in this direction last year in line with the Road Safety Concept for 2018-2022. The European Union’s proposal for cooperation in this area is important for the khokimiyat, and joint work will further enhance the effectiveness of measures.

It is worth noting that in the development of modern town planning, great attention is paid to the creation of conditions for the population in organizing hiking and cycling, and the joint work of the relevant organizations in this direction will certainly bring positive results.
