Corruption Cases Detected in Navoi, Surkhandarya Regions and Tashkent

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — In recent days, a number of corruption offenses have been uncovered among officials and legal professionals in several regions of Uzbekistan.

In Navoi region, the head of the emergency department of the Kyzyltepa district, abusing his official position, demanded US$3,000 for a favorable conclusion confirming that a shopping complex met fire safety requirements.

Security Service officers detained him in his office while receiving the payment. A criminal case has been initiated under Part 1, Article 210 of the Criminal Code, and he has been placed in custody.

In Surkhandarya region, the deputy head of the Bureau of Enforcement of the Jarkurgan district and a state enforcement officer received US$600 to lift a travel ban, as well as 10 million soums for not conducting an auction on farmland plots. Both officials were detained by the Security Service. A criminal case has been opened under Part 3, Article 168 “b” of the Criminal Code.

In Tashkent, a lawyer from a legal bureau and a lawyer from the bar association attempted to obtain US$14,000 to change a pretrial detention measure to house arrest.

During an operation in the Olmazor district, they were detained with evidence in their possession.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated against them under Parts “a” and “b” of Article 168 and Part 2, Article 211 of the Criminal Code, and they have been remanded in custody.
