Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The parliamentary commission to investigate the events of 1-2 July in Nukus sent an appeal to the Prosecutor General’s Office of Uzbekistan, in which it called on it to ensure the openness of information that worries the public.
A regular meeting of the members of the commission to study the situation and events in the Republic of Karakalpakstan was held. The opinions of the members of the Commission, who took part in the court hearings in Bukhara region, regarding the events in the city of Nukus were heard. The open nature of the trials, the testimonies of the accused, victims and witnesses were analyzed and compared with the opinions they expressed to the members of the Commission.
During the participation of members of the Independent Commission in the trials regarding the events that occurred in Karakalpakstan, the circumstances arising in connection with this and causing concern among the general population were studied, and an appropriate appeal was sent to the Prosecutor General’s Office with a request to clarify these situations.
The appeal requested information about 516 citizens detained as suspected of committing mass riots, 22 defendants whose cases are currently being considered in court, other persons temporarily held in closed institutions, brought to administrative responsibility, as well as the question of whether excessive force during riots by law enforcement and cases of human rights violations.
As soon as the final statistical and analytical data on the participants in the judicial investigation process is released, the Independent Commission will inform the public about it.
