Co-Working Center Opening: a free space where civil society organizations can meet and work together

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- At an event today in Tashkent, representatives from the Partnership for Innovations program opened a new co-working center where staff from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other civil society institutions can meet, share information, and work together in an effort to improve civil society in Uzbekistan.

The Partnership for Innovations, which is implemented by Yuksalish Nationwide Movement and the Civil Society Development Association (ARGO) of Kazakhstan, with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), is designed to enhance the role of civil society in Uzbekistan by encouraging constructive and meaningful interaction between civil society institutions, government bodies, and the business community. The two-year program aims to introduce effective mechanisms to help develop civil society and involve citizens in the public administration of the country.

More than 9,200 NGOs currently operate in Uzbekistan and they play an important role in protecting the rights and interests of individuals and legal entities; promoting democratic values; and achieving social, cultural and educational goals. At the same time, systemic problems continue to prevent the active involvement of non-state and non-profit organizations in the process of political, legal and cultural change.

The opening of the co-working center will allow civil society activists to establish important contacts with colleagues, hold discussions, study new civil initiatives, and improve their knowledge and skills. Computers, video-conferencing technology and other office amenities are available in the space, which is free. The project has planned a number of presentations, civilian forums, and videoconferences at the co-working center that will give stakeholders opportunities to discuss and solve problems and improve their interaction with government agencies.

Specialists from key ministries, representatives from international financial institutions, international organizations, and embassies in Uzbekistan, as well as from the local business community, public foundations, NGOs, other civil society institutions, and the media attended the event.
