Chinese Company to Modernize 170 km of Roads and Build a Tunnel in Tashkent
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A large-scale project to modernize Tashkent’s transport infrastructure will be implemented over the next four years with the participation of China Construction Fifth Engineering Division Co., Ltd., according to the Roadmap for establishing an efficient transport management system in the capital.
The total cost of the works, financed through loans from the Bank of China under Uzbekistan’s state guarantees, exceeds US$270 million.
As part of the first stage, the plan includes the repair and upgrade of a three-kilometer section of Shakhrisabz Street, with the introduction of a dedicated bus lane and improvements to the surrounding road infrastructure.
The project is scheduled for completion in September 2026, with a cost of US$6 million. The stage also includes modernization of an 11-kilometer section of Amir Temur Avenue and 5.5 kilometers of Yangi Sergeli Street, both with dedicated bus lanes and infrastructure upgrades. These works are expected to be completed by November 2026, with a budget of US$16.5 million.
In addition, 38 kilometers of Mukhtumkuli Street; Mirzo Ulugbek – Feruza – Yuzrabot; Lutfi; Muqimi; Nurafshon; Karatash – Kukcha Darvoza; and the Tashkent Ring Road – Parkent corridor will undergo repair and modernization, including the installation of bus lanes and upgrades to roadside infrastructure.
The cost of this stage is US$76 million, with implementation planned for 2026–2029.
The second stage includes repairs and upgrades of 36 kilometers of road surface and related infrastructure across 16 streets, with a project value of US$36.5 million. These works are scheduled for completion within 2026.
This stage also includes the construction of an overpass on the Small Ring Road, connecting Pakhlavon Street with Elbek Street near ZO‘R TV. The cost of construction is US$25.4 million, with completion expected in December 2026.
The third stage provides for the repair and modernization of 33 kilometers of roads and infrastructure on nine streets, including dedicated bus lanes, installation of protective barriers, and raised speed bumps to improve pedestrian safety.
The cost of the works totals US$33.5 million, with implementation planned for 2027. Additionally, the construction of an underground traffic tunnel at the junction of Amir Temur Avenue with Rikhsili and Yangishahar streets (the Yunusabad ring junction) is planned, at a cost of US$26.2 million.
During the fourth stage, 50 kilometers of roads and related infrastructure on 15 streets will be repaired and modernized, including the introduction of dedicated bus lanes, installation of protective barriers, and speed bumps to enhance pedestrian safety.
This stage will cost US$51 million, and the works are expected to be completed in 2028.
The implementation of the project will improve traffic capacity, enhance road safety, and accelerate the development of Tashkent’s urban transport system.
