BCG Predicts Uzbekistan’s Electricity Consumption Will Double by 2035 – Reaching 123 Billion kWh

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — According to forecasts by Boston Consulting Group (BCG), electricity consumption in Uzbekistan is expected to nearly double by 2035, reaching 123 billion kWh compared to 68 billion kWh in 2025. This was announced by BCG Managing Director Igor Alekseev at the "Investor Day" in Tashkent.

The event was organized by Franklin Templeton, the manager of the National Investment Fund of Uzbekistan (UzNIF).

The main growth is expected to come from industry, the household sector, transport, and digital infrastructure. Industrial enterprises are projected to increase consumption from 27 to 56 billion kWh, households from 19 to 28 billion kWh, while the shift to electric heating will add around 10 billion kWh.
Electrification of transport will drive consumption from 1.6 to 5.5 billion kWh, and the development of data centers will require up to 9 billion kWh.

To meet the growing demand, a large-scale expansion of energy capacities is planned, totaling 34 GW, mainly from solar and wind power plants.

Plans also include the construction of 9,000 kilometers of power transmission lines, more than 30 new high-voltage substations, and approximately 800 distribution transformer hubs.

According to Alekseev, the government has approved a strategic plan for the development of the energy sector through 2035.

As part of the program, by 2028, Uzbekistan plans to launch a wholesale electricity market, transition to hourly pricing, implement RAB tariffs, involve private operators in grid management, and prepare for IPOs of key companies.
