Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Amid the pandemic, the number of cases of violence against women and girls has increased worldwide. In such circumstances, the role of institutions for the rehabilitation of women victims is very important.
In Uzbekistan, by a decree of the head of state from 2 July 2018, the activities of centers for the rehabilitation and adaptation of persons affected by violence and the prevention of suicide have been established. Currently, there are 197 such centers in our country. According to the data of the Republican Center, by December last year more than 21 thousand citizens had received applications, including 986 men, 788 children and 19,784 women.
But, up to this point, the centers did not collect comprehensive information to analyze the situation of violence. Meanwhile, the development of gender statistics and its analysis is one of the methods of achieving equality in this area.
In addition, accurate and complete data contributes to public awareness of violence against women. The lack of this kind of information does not allow us to evaluate the effectiveness of the work being done to solve this problem.
To achieve these goals, the Commission for Gender Equality of the Republic of Uzbekistan, with the support of the Swedish Embassy, within the framework of a joint project of the Ministry for Support of Mahalla and Family and UNDP, has developed an electronic journal to collect and analyze gender statistics for rehabilitation and adaptation centers for victims of violence, and suicide prevention. This is the first time this kind of data has been collected in Uzbekistan.
This journal was developed on the basis of studying the experience of a number of foreign countries. When developing the database, the confidentiality of the victims of violence was taken into account.
Starting in August, each regional shelter office has been filling this database based on complaints from victims of violence. At the end of each month, the regional centers send updated data to the republican rehabilitation center. In this way, accurate data on gender issues will be collected.
