ADB Presents Opportunities for Private Sector Participation in Uzbekistan's Transport Sector

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- ADB team presented international examples of private sector participation in railway sector to heads of departments of the Ministry of Finance of Uzbekistan and the PPP Development Agency. ADB side was presented by CWTC Director H. Iwasaki, Deputy Country Director E. Pinali, Principal PPP Specialist A. Galiyev, Chief PPP Specialist, Consultant on PPP and PSP in Railway sector B. Bayatovich and other transport team members. Uzbek side was headed by the 1st Deputy Minister of Finance O. Nasritdinkhodjaev.

It was noted that the participation of the private sector in the railway sector is part of a wider transformation of the railway sector targeted by the Government. In addition, evolution of railway industry structures in some countries shows a clear shift from integrated companies towards more commercial and market-responsive decision making. Reviewing the potential for outsourcing and privatization of each component of the rail business is a practical step to involve the private sector in many of the rail transport transformations. As a result, a well-planned and managed rail transformation has great potential to generate and deliver tangible benefits to the government.

The ADB transport sector team met with the Minister of Finance T. Ishmetov and Deputy Minister O. Isakov, during which the possibilities of private sector participation in the entire transport sphere of Uzbekistan were considered.

It should be noted that at a meeting on 7 June under the leadership of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the need to accelerate the transformation of the railway system and attract private investors to the transport sector of Uzbekistan were highlighted.
