Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 18 October 2022, the fifth General Assembly of the Association of World Electoral Bodies (A-WEB) began its work in Cape Town (South Africa). The delegation of the CEC of the Republic of Uzbekistan, headed by the chairman Z. Nizamkhojaev, takes part in the work of the General Assembly.
A-WEB is the largest association of electoral administrations worldwide. It was established as an international organization in October 2013. Currently, A-WEB unites 119 electoral bodies from 109 countries.
The activities of the A-WEB are aimed at developing international cooperation in the exchange of experience and holding democratic elections, providing support to the electoral authorities of the participating countries.
Uzbekistan has been a member of A-WEB since 2013. In this context, it should be noted the building up of fruitful cooperation between Uzbekistan and the Association.
On 2 February 2016, a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between the CEC and A-WEB, and in October 2017, the CEC became a member of the Executive Board of the Association.
A-WEB representatives regularly take part in monitoring the presidential and parliamentary elections in our country. Also in November 2018, the A-WEB delegation took part in the international conference “Improving the electoral legislation and democratic elections: the experience of Uzbekistan and international practice”, organized by the CEC in connection with the development of the Electoral Code.
In turn, the delegations of Uzbekistan participates in the work of the meetings of the General Assembly and the Executive Board of the Association, in the A-WEB training programs on capacity building in the electoral process, as well as in the observer missions from the WAIS during the electoral processes of the member countries of the Association.
Today, on 18 October, an extraordinary meeting of the A-WEB Executive Committee took place. A member of the electoral body of South Africa and the chairman of the electoral body of India addressed the audience with a welcoming speech.
As part of the agenda of the meeting, a vote was held to nominate the candidature of the A-WEB Secretary General for subsequent consideration by the General Assembly. The issues of admission of Lesotho to the membership of the Association, appointment of members of the Supervision and Audit Committee, the agenda of the fifth General Assembly and other issues were also considered.
In accordance with the program of the fifth General Assembly of the A-WEB on 19 October, a meeting of the General Assembly will be held.
Also on 20 October, within the framework of the General Assembly, the International Conference "Protection of electoral bodies in an era of democratic decline" will be held.
