A City for People: Tashkent Upgrades Public Transport Stops

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Tashkent is actively improving its public transport infrastructure to accommodate growing passenger volumes and meet rising expectations for comfort, safety, and service quality. The government is expanding the bus fleet, updating routes, and enhancing surrounding infrastructure, creating conditions for safe and convenient travel for city residents.

Special attention is being given to public transport stops. The organization and modernization efforts, which began last year, continue under the coordination of specialists from the Center for Traffic Management (CTM).

According to the Tashkent city administration, an initial audit covered the busiest streets spanning 100 kilometers, inventorying more than 360 stops and 190 major and minor intersections.

The audit revealed 110 commercial outlets along public transport routes, including 61 operating without documentation confirming the right to use stop areas. Their activities will be evaluated, and appropriate legal measures will be applied.

At the same time, the city administration approved a plan to update all stops. Entrepreneurs with valid permits will be able to benefit from a compensation mechanism, allowing them to relocate their commercial points outside the stop boundaries.

Global best practices indicate that modern public transport stops should provide free and safe waiting areas, platforms of adequate width with the ability to expand during peak loads, and an inclusive environment.

The administration emphasized that this approach is becoming the foundation for the modernization of Tashkent’s stop infrastructure, making the city more convenient and safer for all passengers.
