Some 800 children with special needs go to mainstream schools

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- About 800 days with special needs started to study at mainstream schools and kindergartens in the result of implementation of the EU-funded project “Inclusive Education for Children with Special Needs in Uzbekistan”.
Project manager Stefania Alishauskane said that about 800 children with special educational needs were included to mainstream general schools and kindergartens and studied with help of teachers, who underwent inclusive education courses. She said that five pilot resource centers and 30 pilot schools and kindergartens were opened in five regions of Uzbekistan.
The EU financed “Inclusive Education for Children with Special Needs in Uzbekistan” Project was launched in March 2014 and implemented in the five pilot regions of Tashkent, Samarkand, Namangan, Urgench and Termez. The project budget is EUR 1,995,000. The National Center for Social Adaptation of Children is the Main Project Beneficiary. It is envisaged that about 700 children with special educational needs in pre-school and schooling age will be enrolled in mainstream education.
Regional expert for Tashkent region DIldora Tulyaganiva said that the resource centers, created within the project, are key chain between parents, public and teachers on promotion of inclusive education. The centers support parents and teachers, hold various meetings related to inclusive education, gather data and provide consulting information.
Stefania Alishauskane noted that National strategy for inclusive education was developed and currently considered at the corresponding ministries and departments of Uzbekistan.
