Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Inha University in Tashkent (IUT) held a contest among math teachers of schools, lyceums and colleges. Elizaveta An, a teacher of academic lyceum of Westminster International University in Tashkent, won the contest.
It is worth to mention that the Math Teachers Contest was organized within the First Touch Math Festival. According to the competition criteria, participants had to solve the mathematical problems prepared by professors of IUT. South Korean specialists of Inha University in Tashkent assessed the works, submitted by math teachers.
Elizaveta An won the main prize of the contest – Tablet computer. She also got a chance to take part in the IUT Faculty Fostering Program and continue her education at master’s or PhD levels at some of the leading universities of South Korea.
In interview to the IUT press service, she told us about herself, why she chose math and her plans for the future.
IUT: Please tell us about yourself.
Elizaveta An: I was born in Pskent city of Tashkent region. I have wonderful parents and sister, whom I love very much. We have a very cordial relationship and boundless trust in each other. I studied at the school No.2 of Pskent, and after graduation I enrolled to the Mechanics and Mathematics Faculty of National University of Uzbekistan, my specialty is applied mathematics and computer science.
IUT: Why do you choose math?
Elizaveta An: Everybody in our family have technical education. My parents are engineers-builders, and my sister and I chose applied mathematics and computer science. From childhood, I liked exact science, especially, mathematics and computer science. Therefore, when the time came, I decided to enroll to the Mechanics and Mathematics Faculty of the National University of Uzbekistan.
After Bachelor’s degree, I decided to continue my education and receive Master’s decree. I felt need to study and develop further. While studying at the university, I had two heads of research. E.M Saidamatov was head of research at undergraduate level. He patiently and clearly explained the theory of mathematical physics and functional analysis.
At the graduate level, Professor K.S. Fayazov was the head of research. He is working on a relatively newly opened direction math – numerical methods for solving ill-posed problems of mathematical physics. Therefore, during my studies, I worked more on mathematics than programming.
While studying at the Masters, I also worked as a teacher of Math at School No. 249 and TESTOLOG Educational center. After graduation, I took a job as a math teacher at the academic lyceum under the Westminster International University in Tashkent.
I really enjoy working, because children here are so clever and really love studying. The most important thing for me is that children are interested in acquiring new knowledge and trying to develop a way of thinking. It delivers considerable joy and satisfaction.
IUT: How do you find out about the contest?
Elizaveta An: I found out about the contest among math teachers of Inha University in Tashkent accidently. Before New Year holidays, one of my colleagues told me, that Inha University is holding the contest among match teachers. I have checked their website and I liked the idea of the contest. All participant were required to explain all proposed exercises based on concrete example. Therefore, the topics were explained from the practical point of view. It was very interesting and entertaining.
The contest helped me to deepen my knowledge in mathematics. From now on I decided that every time I will explain my students new theme I will try to show them the practical side of these knowledge. I think this approach will be more interesting to my students.
I want to note that it would be good if the contest was held not only in English. Many very strong math teachers wished to participate, but couldn’t because of the language requirements.
IUT: What are you plans for future, taking into account that you can participate in the IUT Faculty Fostering Program?
Elizaveta An: It is great honor and pleasure for me to be part of this program. For me growth is very important. I would like to continue my studies abroad and obtain a PhD degree.
