KOICA and Navoi regional administration open Korea-Uzbekistan Friendship Forest

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 10 November 2015, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), implementing grant aid programs of the government of Korea Republic, jointly with Navoi regional administration held an opening ceremony of Korea-Uzbekistan Friendship Forest.
This Friendship Forest with approximate area of 0.5 ha was established with the assistance of the Republic of Korea within the Project for Greenery of the Territory Attached to Navoi FIEZ (2013-2016/US$2.5 million) for prevention of desertification.
The establishment of Friendship Forest demonstrated the Korean technologies in greening and creation of areas for recreation of local population. This project is the first one in the field of greening, implemented between Korea and Uzbekistan.
KOICA launched the implementation of the 4-year Project for Greenery of the Territory Attached to Navoi FIEZ in 2013, as per the request of the Government of Uzbekistan. Project objectives include the improvement of the ecological environment and living conditions of the local population around the Navoi FIEZ.
Using advanced Korean technology and equipment the project established a nursery for seedlings. Further, the project also plans to transfer technological expertise for creation of protective afforestation against sand storms and winds with an area of 140 hectares.
The construction companies "Supra" JSC and «SK» JSC performed the design services for the greenery of the territory attached to Navoi FIEZ for creating a master plan for the greening, as well as creation of areas for the cultivation of seedlings. Through invitational trainings in Korea on landscaping technologies and planting, KOICA intends to contribute to capacity building of personnel in this field.
The First deputy Governor of Navoi region K.I.Rasulov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea to Uzbekistan Lee Wook-heon, Head of Navoi regional department for Foreign Economic Relations, Investments and Trade U.Islamov, Director of KOICA Uzbekistan Office Im Jeong Hee, local residents and other high level officials attended the ceremony. The ceremony was accompanied with congratulation speeches with regards to the opening of the Korean-Uzbek Friendship Forest.
In his congratulatory speech Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea to Uzbekistan Lee Wookheon stated: “The Forest of Friendship in Navoi region, established within a successful project on greening, reflects the deep friendship between the two countries. I hope it becomes a favorite place for local population’s recreation, and serves as a symbol of prosperity for future cooperation between the two countries in the field of greening”. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea expressed a hope that such greening works will be implemented throughout all regions of Uzbekistan.
