EU Special Representative visits Uzbekistan on 20-21 July

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Special Representative of the European Union for Central Asia Peter Burian paid a visit to Tashkent on 20-21. This was his first visit to Uzbekistan after he was appointed to this post on 15 April 2015.
Peter Burian held constructive negotiations with the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Uzbekistan Rustam Azimov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan Abdulaziz Kamilov, members of the parliament of Uzbekistan Nurdijon Ismailov and Akmal Saidov at the Legislative Chamber and Sodiq Safaev at Senate of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan.
Within the visit the EU envoy met with the representatives of the Uzbek civil society and European businesses, international organizations in Uzbekistan. He also briefed the heads of the missions of the EU on main results of his visit, the press service of the EU delegation in Uzbekistan said.
Burian briefed the Uzbek partners on details of the latest conclusion of implementation of the EU Strategy for Central Asia and underlined role of the Central Asian states in preparation of the document.
At the meeting with Rustam Azimov, Peter Burian said that updated EU Strategy for Central Asia is the bases, on which cooperation between the EU and Central Asian partners is built. It reflects directions of cooperation, representing mutual interest. The regional budget of the EU programmes reached 1.068 billion euros for current seven year period.
At the meetings, the sides also exchanged opinion on developing cooperation between Uzbekistan and the EU to ensure security, develop agriculture, education, human rights, energy, water management and economic cooperation..
During the talks, Ambassador Burian stressed commitment of the EU to assist Uzbekistan in strengthening the rule of law and good governance. The sides also discussed the possibilities of expanding bilateral trade and investment cooperation, and major events in the Central Asian region.
EU Special Representative thanked his interlocutors in Uzbekistan for the hospitality and said he hoped to further strengthen the positive momentum in the development of relations between Uzbekistan and the European Union and its transfer to the next stage of advancement in all spheres of cooperation.
