Regional Secretariat of CBRN Centers opens in Tashkent

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Regional Secretariat of Chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear centres of excellence for Central Asia was opened in Tashkent on 17 July.
The opening ceremony was attended by officials of the European Union, the United Nations and the Government of Uzbekistan.
The event was a part of the global initiative, financed by the European Union and implemented by the Joint Research Center of the EU and UN Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI).
The initiative is directed at decreasing chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear of criminal, accidental or natural origin, by promoting better and more coordinated policy. To this end, the potential will be created to share best practices and methodologies as well as to respond to the specific needs of member states.
The initiative unites over 51 countries and launched in eight various regions of the world: African Atlantic Façade, Central Asia, North Africa, Middle East, South Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, Moldova and Ukraine, South East Asia, Central and Eastern Africa and Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan joined to the initiative from Central Asia along with Uzbekistan. The region already realized eight projects within the initiative and currentlt partner countries are working on developing regional projects, assessing needs and development of CBRN national action plans for each country.
The Regional Secretariats communicate with National Focal Points (NFPs) and CBRN teams, and assist in the implementation of projects in each region. The Regional Secretariats are responsible for supporting countries in the identification of needs, the formulation of regionally focused project proposals, the development and improvement of CBRN National Action Plans and the execution of approved projects. Each Regional Secretariat organizes biannual round table meetings for all NFPs in the region in order to coordinate activities, exchange views and opinions and ensure the sustainability of the network.
