Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- President of Russia Vladimir Putin signed Federal Law “On Ratification of the Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Cooperation in Export to the Russian Federation of Irradiated Nuclear Fuel from the IIN-ZM Research Reactor”.
State Duma passed the law on 19 December, while Senate of Russian approved it on 25 December 2014.
The document ratifies the Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Cooperation in Export to the Russian Federation of Irradiated Nuclear Fuel from the IIN-ZM Research Reactor, which was signed in Moscow on 9 April 2014.
Currently, there is irradiated fuel at nuclear fuel reactor IIN-3M of Foton enterprise, located in Tashkent suburb. The Russia will transfer about 30 liters of fuel, which consists of about 5 kg of uranium of 90% enrichment.
The reactor, equipment and fuel for reactor were constructed during the USSR period. The reactor was commissioned in 1975. In 2002, Uzbekistan developed a plan to remove reactor. But, the country cannot meet requirements of the IAEA on storage of liquid fuel and the Uzbek side asked Russia to take the fuel.
It is expected that fuel from Uzbekistan will be processed at Mayak and processed fuel will remain in the Russia.
