CEC chief: Voter turnout exceeds 88%

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Over 88% of voters casted their ballots at the elections to the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan and regional, district and city Councils of People’s Deputies ended in Uzbekistan, chairperson of the Central Election Commission of Uzbekistan (CEC) Mirzo-Ulugbek Abdusalov said at the briefing.
Mirzo-Ulugbek Abdusalov said that polling stations were closed at 20:00 Tashkent time. He added that voting is continuing at some polling stations, created at diplomatic missions of Uzbekistan in Europe and the United States.
The CEC chief said that over 18 million people from total 20.789 million registered voters participated in the elections. This makes up over 88% of total number of voters, he stated.
He said that the vote counting is taking place at the polling stations. The preliminary results of the elections will be announced on 22 December 2014.
Mirzo-Ulugbek Abdusalov said that the Ecologic Movement of Uzbekistan held a conference on election of MPs to the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan. The delegates elected 15 MPs to the Legislative Chamber. The vote counting is underway.
Over 300 observers from 50 states and five international organizations, including OSCE ODIHR, CIS Executive Committee, Shanghai Cooperation Organization and Organization of the Islamic Conference, as well as World Association of electoral bodies observed elections in Uzbekistan.
More 70,000 observers and authorized representatives of political parties participating in the elections observed the elections across the country.
