UNWTO chief: Uzbekistan can become center for tourism development

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan can become one of main centers of tourism development, the Secretary-General of the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Taleb Rifai said at the opening of the 99th session of the Executive Council of the WTO in Samarkand.
He expressed gratitude to Uzbekistan and the President of Uzbekistan for hosting of the 99th session of the UNWTO Executive Council in Samarkand. He expressed gratitude to Samarkand and it citizens for warm welcome and assistance for organization of the event.
He said that Samarkand has over 3,000 year of history, but it also modern city. Taleb Rifai said that Uzbekistan is located at Great Silk Road and it is key factor of tourism development of Uzbekistan. He said that Uzbekistan’s tourism sector is developing with fast tempo in recent years. He said that over 2 million tourists visited Uzbekistan in 2013, which rose twice compared to figure of 2010.
Taleb Rifai said that Uzbekistan has over 7,000 historic monuments and major part of them were included to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The UNWTO Secretary-General said he visited Samarkand Institute of Economic and Service and familiarized with educational process. He noted that Uzbek youth are future of the country.
He said that Uzbekistan works on developing tourism and high speed train on route Tashkent-Samarkand will help to boost tourism in the country.
The UNWTO chief said that the growth of tourism envisages great responsibility. Uzbekistan preserves its historic and cultural heritage and directs significant resources to restore and rehabilitate unique historic monuments.
Currently, Great Silk Road become powerful brand, which stimulates development of tourism in Asia as a whole and Uzbekistan in particular, he said. Taleb Rifai said that Uzbekistan was one of the main initiators of revival of the Great Silk Road. Rifai said that 31 countries are now united to revive Great Silk Road as one of tourism routes.
The UNWTO chief expressed gratitude to people of Uzbekistan and President Islam Karimov for their work in development of tourism as important part of economy. He said that Uzbekistan can become one of the main centers for development of tourism.
