Uzbekistan plans to double coal production

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan plans to double coal production by 2016. Currently, the country produces over 4 million tonnes of coal a year.
The main consumer of coal in Uzbekistan is power sector, which consumes over 85% of solid fuel. There is also demand for coal in industry, social, education and communal sectors, as well as population.
Currently, the major part of coal in Uzbekistan is mined at Angren coal mine. Shargunkumir also develops coal mine in Surkhandarya region.
Uzbekistan adopted a programme on developing coal industry till 2014 in line with the governmental resolution from 6 June 2013.
Within the programme, it is planned to implement nine projects with estimated cost of over US$555 million. It is planned to direct US$100 million to modernize Shargunkumir, US$106 million – construction of coal mine at Apartak, US$232 million – to update old equipment and US$78 million to modernize railway fleet of Uzbekugol.
It is planned to use investments for US$120 million in 2014, of which US$99 million will be loans of the banks and US$21 million – own resources of Uzbekugol joint stock company.
The explored coal reserves of Uzbekistan makes up 1.833 million tones, of which 1.786 million tonnes are brown coal, 46.3 million tonnes – stone coal. The forecasted resources makes up 323.4 million tonnes of coal.
Largest reserves of coal are located in Surkhandarya and Kashkadarya regions. Currently, the coal is mined at Angren, Shargun and Baisun fields.
