Uzbekistan, Latvia to expand economic cooperation

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Minister of Foreign Economic Relations, Investment and Trade Elyor Ganiyev met with the Minister of Economy of Latvia Daniels Pavluts on 15 October 2013.
During the talks, the sides agreed to strengthen and expand economic cooperation between two states.
The sides emphasized the positive trends of Latvian-Uzbek trade, which has been growing since 2010, agreeing that there is still considerable potential for cooperation. Among the most promising cooperation sectors, the officials mentioned transit and logistics, pharmaceuticals, food industry, information and communication technology, agriculture, mechanical engineering and metal processing, light industry, production of construction materials and tourism.
It is important to strengthen the dialogue and cooperation between Latvian and Uzbek businessmen, fostering their participation in fairs and international exhibitions and ensuring active and well-timed information exchange on scheduled events and cooperation opportunities, Pavluts said.
To establish closer cooperation and develop Latvian-Uzbek cargo flows, a memorandum of understanding between the Latvian Economy Ministry and the Uzbek Foreign Economic Relations, Investment and Trade Ministry will be signed during Uzbek President Islam Karimov’s visit to Latvia on 16-17 October.
Its goal is to expand Latvian-Uzbek trade relations, increase trade volumes, strengthen and maintain cooperation, form close ties between Latvian and Uzbek entrepreneurs.
The Latvian-Uzbek business forum was held in Riga on 15 October 2013. Representatives of some 14 Uzbek and 50 companies, working in such sectors as chemistry, pharmaceuticals, light industry, transport and logistics, marketing and others, participated in the event.
