Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Rt Hon Baroness Warsi visited Uzbekistan from 7 – 10 April. She held meetings with members of the Uzbek government in Tashkent and explored Uzbekistan’s rich Islamic heritage in Samarkand and Bukhara.
Rt Hon Baroness Warsi, Minister without Portfolio in the British Cabinet, and co-Chair of the Conservative Party met members of the Uzbek government, including Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Komilov and Minister for Economy Galina Saidova, in Tashkent for bilateral discussions.
Baroness Warsi spoke to students at Westminster International University Tashkent, and launched the British Council’s Enterprise Award 2012. The Baroness met the Women’s Committee of Uzbekistan and discussed cooperation on a ‘Women in Business’ project. She also met the Speaker of the Oliy Majlis and discussed parliamentary cooperation.
Visiting Bukhara and Samarkand, Baroness Warsi met the Khokims from both regions and proposed cultural exchanges between the UK and Uzbekistan. Baroness Warsi was able to explore Uzbekistan’s rich history at some of the greatest Islamic sites in the Muslim world, including the Mir-i-Arab madrassa, Imam al-Bukhari mausoleum and Shah-i-Zinda. The Baroness visited the Uthman Quran and planted a tree in Bukhara.
