Young Man Detained in Tashkent Region for Misappropriating Charitable Donations

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A case of cyber fraud involving the misappropriation of charitable donations has been uncovered in Tashkent region.

According to the press service of the regional Main Internal Affairs Directorate, the suspect exploited social media for personal financial gain.

The 21-year-old resident of Bukhara region, identified by the initials M.D., would download Instagram videos appealing for help for sick children, edit them, replace the original bank account details with his own, and redirect donations to a card registered in his mother's name.

Preliminary findings indicate that from October 2025 until the time of his exposure, approximately two thousand transactions totaling 161 million soums were received on the card. The suspect spent all of the money on personal expenses.

A criminal case has been opened under paragraph "g," part 3, article 168 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan — fraud — and an investigation is currently underway.

The operation was carried out by the Cybercrime Division of the Tashkent Region Main Internal Affairs Directorate following complaints submitted by members of the public.
