Women’s rights are at the center of public attention

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 23 September 2019, a training seminar for employees of the Rehabilitation and Adaptation Centers for victims of violence at the territorial units of the Women’s Committee of Uzbekistan began in Tashkent.

The event was organized by the Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan for the Protection of Gender Equality of Women with the assistance of the Embassy of France in Uzbekistan and the Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development of France (ACTED) as part of the project “Strengthening the Role of Women by Protecting Their Rights and Increasing Labor Activity in Uzbekistan”.

Speakers noted that achieving equality between women and men is important in ensuring the sustainable development of the state and society. Today, gender balance is not only an ethical principle, but also an important factor in economic stability and growth. Despite the fact that lately more attention has been paid to gender issues in the world, especially in developed and developing countries, the role of women in the economy and business is insufficient - both in comparison with potential and to meet the needs of modern society.

Strengthening their professional and business activities largely depends on the support and conditions provided to them. That is why today in Uzbekistan much attention is paid to the assistance of the state of the self-realization of women, the protection of their rights and freedoms. At the same time, particular importance is attached to protecting the rights of women victims of violence, creating the conditions for their return to normal life and further social adaptation.

A clear confirmation of this was the seminar, the purpose of which is to increase the capacity of the Centers for Rehabilitation and Adaptation of Victims of Violence created by the Committee of Women of Uzbekistan to provide legal support to women victims of violence and to accompany them in the process of protecting their rights. In addition, the training seminar aims to exchange best practices between France and Uzbekistan in this area.

The main topics of the training are the concepts of gender, gender equality and violence against women, the international system for the protection of human rights - women’s rights. In addition, issues related to violence against them in international law were considered - obligations related to the implementation of the recommendations of the Committee on the Elimination of Violence against Women, international human rights conventions.

The subject of analysis was the practice of preventing and responding to violence against women in France and Uzbekistan. In the context of gender opportunities, the national system for protecting the rights of women and the relevant legislation of Uzbekistan were considered.

Brief theoretical and informational blocks, various practical and situational techniques presented at the seminar give participants the opportunity to increase their knowledge in the field of gender equality, protecting women’s rights, as well as in providing legal support to victims of violence, and accompanying them in the process of protecting their rights.
