“Uzbekneftegaz” Discusses Development of Geothermal Energy in Uzbekistan with International Geothermal Association

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 25 September 2025, the leadership of JSC “Uzbekneftegaz” held a meeting with Dr. Marit Brommer, Director-General of the International Geothermal Association (IGA), focused on the prospects for developing geothermal energy in Uzbekistan and its use for the benefit of the country’s population.

The International Geothermal Association unites experts and organizations from more than 110 countries and serves as a neutral global platform for promoting best practices, standards, and partnerships in geothermal energy. Major projects involving IGA are being implemented in Iceland, Indonesia, Turkey, Canada, Germany, Kenya, and China, enabling the association to contribute to achieving international climate and environmental goals.

During the negotiations, B.B. Sidikov, Chairman of the Board of JSC “Uzbekneftegaz,” emphasized the importance of developing geothermal energy as a promising direction that can strengthen the country’s energy resilience, diversify energy sources, and reduce its carbon footprint. Particular attention was paid to the use of geothermal energy for electricity generation, heating residential and industrial facilities, supporting agricultural needs, and integration into green energy projects through the utilization of inactive wells within the oil and gas sector.

Dr. Marit Brommer stated, “Geothermal energy is the heat beneath our feet: always available and local. With a well-thought-out strategy, Uzbekistan can become a leader in Central Asia, meeting the region’s food, water, and energy needs. Geothermal energy plays a key role in combating climate change, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and paving the way toward a carbon-neutral future.”

Following the meeting, the parties agreed to establish a joint working group between IGA and JSC “Uzbekneftegaz.” The group’s main tasks will include implementing international experience, developing synergies with the oil and gas sector, and creating a roadmap for further geothermal project development in Uzbekistan. Special attention will be given to environmental protection, the sustainable use of natural resources, and the integration of modern green technologies.
