Uzbekistan’s Nuclear Project Called a “Global Showcase”
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The implementation of Uzbekistan’s nuclear power plant project, featuring both large and small reactor units, could become a “global showcase” for the industry, said Alexey Likhachev in an interview with RT.
According to Likhachev, the project carries global significance due to its unique combination of technologies. He noted that the contract for constructing a small nuclear plant with a capacity of around 50 megawatts represents the world’s first export agreement of its kind.
Likhachev expressed confidence that the Uzbekistan site, integrating reactor units of different capacities, could demonstrate new approaches and open prospects for further export solutions in the nuclear energy sector.
In 2024, Rosatom and the Uzbek Agency for Atomic Energy under the Cabinet of Ministers signed the world’s first export contract for the construction of a small nuclear power plant based on a Russian design.
An additional agreement in 2025 provides for the construction of two large reactor units using VVER-1000 Generation 3+ technology, along with two small units with RITM-200N reactors of 55 megawatts each.
