Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Construction Denies Reports of 9,000 Faulty Elevators
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Ministry of Construction and Housing and Communal Services has denied reports claiming that more than nine thousand elevators in Tashkent are faulty.
According to the ministry, there are 13,798 elevators across the country, installed in 5,491 apartment buildings. Of these, 12,987 are passenger elevators and 811 are freight elevators.
In Tashkent alone, 9,144 elevators operate in 3,245 buildings. Among them, 1,835 elevators have exceeded their service life, but their replacement is already underway in accordance with Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 98 dated 17 February 2025.
The modernization program is scheduled for 2025–2028, with 452 elevators planned for replacement this year.
Additionally, under Government Resolution No. 801 of 6 October 2017, all elevators in Uzbekistan undergo mandatory annual technical inspections.
Since 1 May 2025, a unified electronic platform “Safe Elevator” has been operational, enabling real-time monitoring of elevator conditions in apartment buildings. The system also provides citizens with up-to-date information on maintenance and technical status.
The ministry emphasized that deficiencies identified during inspections do not mean the elevator is faulty, noting that such checks are part of preventive safety control measures.
“The Ministry continues to monitor elevator operations and implements measures for further sector development to prevent potential issues,” the statement concluded.
