Uzbekistan’s biodiversity presented in Geneva
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 16-27 August 2019, a delegation of the Republic of Uzbekistan headed by Deputy Chairman of the State Committee for Ecology and Environmental Protection Uktam Utayev participated in the 18th conference of the parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Endangered Flora (CITES).
According to the Permanent Mission of Uzbekistan in Geneva, the CITES events were attended by delegations from 118 states that are parties to the Convention.
The Uzbek delegation familiarized the participants with the measures taken for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity, which are one of the priority directions of the state environmental policy of the republic. Particular emphasis was placed on the development of legislation in the field of nature conservation, the conservation of biodiversity and the use of natural resources in recent years, as well as the mitigation of the consequences of the Aral Sea disaster and the creation of favorable socio-environmental conditions in the Aral Sea zone.
As part of their stay in Geneva, the Uzbek delegation met with CITES Secretary General Ivona Higuera.
It substantively discussed issues of developing cooperation between the CITES Secretariat and the State Committee for Ecology and Environmental Protection on the implementation of technical assistance projects to help restore ecosystems and biodiversity, protect flora and fauna in the republic.
