Uzbekistan to Receive Continued Support from the World Bank and IDA
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Last week, Akihiko Nishio, Vice President of the World Bank for Development Finance, paid an official visit to Tashkent. In his role, he is responsible for mobilizing the World Bank’s financial resources, including those of the International Development Association (IDA), which provides concessional financing and grants to low-income countries.
According to the World Bank office in Tashkent, Uzbekistan is one of the largest recipients of IDA support in the Europe and Central Asia region. Of the 25 government-led projects implemented with World Bank assistance across various economic sectors, totaling approximately US$5 billion, over 70% are financed through IDA concessional loans.
Accompanied by Najji Benhassin, Regional Director of the World Bank for Central Asia, Akihiko Nishio held productive talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance of Uzbekistan Jamshid Kuchkarov. The discussions focused on the progress of IDA-funded projects and the World Bank’s continued support for the government’s economic, social, and infrastructure programs.
Additionally, Nishio participated in a roundtable organized by the Ministry of Economy and Finance, attended by representatives of various ministries and agencies. Participants highlighted the positive impact of IDA concessional financing on successful socio-economic development programs and discussed prospects for continued collaboration between IDA and Uzbekistan in this area.
