Uzbekistan to Procure Hyundai High-Speed Trains for Mountain Routes
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Minister of Transport of Uzbekistan, Ilhom Makhkamov, told Uzbekiston 24 TV channel about plans to expand the fleet of high-speed electric trains to serve mountain routes.
“We have railways crossing the Kamchik Pass, connecting the Ferghana Valley, and Darband, linking Kashkadarya and Surkhandarya regions. Today, we approved a program to purchase modern South Korean trains capable of operating efficiently on mountainous sections. The President has endorsed our plans,” the minister said.
Chairman of the Board of “Uzbekistan Railways,” Zufar Narzullaev, specified that six Hyundai Rotem high-speed trains are expected to be delivered in 2026 for the Tashkent — Urgench — Khiva route. By 2030, an additional eight trains will be purchased to serve the Tashkent — Termez and Tashkent — Andijan routes, which pass through mountainous terrain.
In addition, Uzbekistan plans to procure 38 mainline, 50 shunting, and hybrid shunting locomotives from China.
To increase passenger capacity, production of 250 passenger cars and acquisition of 23 intercity electric trains are planned.
The President has set objectives for the manufacture of 10,000 freight wagons, restoration of more than 6,000 wagons, and major overhauls of 12 electric locomotives.
