Uzbekistan to Present National Experience in Protecting the Rights of Displaced Persons and Stateless Persons in Geneva

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — From 15 to 17 December 2025, a delegation of the Republic of Uzbekistan, led by Akmal Saidov, Director of the National Human Rights Center, will participate in the second High-Level Officials’ Meeting — the 2025 Progress Review of the Global Refugee Forum in Geneva.

The event is held within the framework of a meeting organized by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in cooperation with the Swiss Confederation. Its purpose is to review the implementation of the objectives of the Global Compact on Refugees, assess the fulfillment of commitments made by states at the Global Forums in 2019 and 2023, and strengthen international solidarity and mechanisms for the fair sharing of responsibility.

During the meeting, the Uzbek delegation will present the country’s national experience and achievements in protecting the rights of forcibly displaced persons and stateless individuals. Uzbekistan has been consistently strengthening its legal framework in line with international standards, including enshrining in the revised Constitution guarantees of rights and freedoms for foreign citizens and stateless persons.

Within the framework of the UN global campaign #IBelong, New Uzbekistan has made significant progress in reducing statelessness: more than 85,000 people have acquired Uzbek citizenship. Today, the country demonstrates one of the most sustainable regional indicators in Central Asia for preventing and eliminating statelessness.

Special attention at the forum will be given to Uzbekistan’s humanitarian role amid the crisis in neighboring Afghanistan. The country has supported the deployment of a regional UNHCR humanitarian logistics hub in Termez, facilitating the rapid delivery of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan and other regions in need.

The forum will also address issues of expanding support for refugees and host states, analyzing the implementation of previously undertaken commitments, and exchanging information on measures taken by Uzbekistan and other countries to protect vulnerable populations.

A particular focus will be on developing international partnerships and disseminating best practices.

Uzbekistan’s participation in the Global Refugee Forum underscores the country’s commitment to fulfilling international obligations and its determination to contribute practical solutions for protecting the rights of displaced persons and stateless individuals.
