Uzbekistan to Cancel Loans Taken Out by Fraudsters
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan is implementing a new mechanism to protect citizens from the consequences of credit fraud. According to a resolution of the Central Bank, registered with the Ministry of Justice, individuals will be relieved of obligations for online loans taken out in their name by fraudsters.
The resolution establishes a procedure for compensating victims. To initiate the process, a citizen must submit an application to law enforcement authorities. This triggers a pre-investigation check, inquiry, and initial investigative actions.
If fraud is confirmed, a resolution by an investigator, prosecutor, or court decision recognizing the individual as a victim is sent to the financial institution that issued the loan. Based on this document, the institution must stop accrual of principal, interest, penalties, and fees, and suspend debt collection from the victim.
In cases where funds have already been collected, the bank is required to return the money to the victim’s bank card or designated account.
Creditors retain the right to challenge the results of the investigation or court decision if they doubt the existence of fraud, which may trigger a repeat review. If fraud is not confirmed, loan accruals resume.
The resolution comes into force on 22 April 2026.
