Uzbekistan, Russia implement joint project on construction of Suffa observatory
“The biggest project in our science and technology cooperation is construction on Uzbekistan’s territory of the Suffa international radio astronomy observatory,” the Russian leader noted.
He said that it will be equipped with the largest RT-70 radio telescope, which will make it possible to carry out unique scientific research, including in space communications.
The Suffa international radio astronomy observatory is located on a high plateau Suffa in the spurs of the Turkestan Range in Uzbekistan, 250 km away from Tashkent (50 km from the village Zaamin).
The search for place to construction of observatory took five years. The first stone of the observatory was put in May 1981. In 1981-1991, the metrological station worked at the site. In 1985, the project of Suffa international radio astronomy observatory was developed, but it was changed in 2005.
In 1991-2005, the project was suspended due to lack of financial resources. In 1995, Uzbekistan and Russia signed an intergovernmental agreement on joint works on completion of construction of the observatory.
