Uzbekistan Proposes Special License Plates for Heavy Trucks and Mining Dump Trucks

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan plans to introduce separate registration plates for heavy-duty trucks and mining dump trucks, as well as establish liability for their nighttime parking on road shoulders, according to a draft Cabinet of Ministers resolution published for public discussion.

Under the proposal, Type I3 plates with the designation “YUK” will be assigned to trucks and specialized vehicles of category N3 weighing over 44 tons. These plates will feature a red background with white letters and numbers, with the regional code on the left and the Uzbekistan flag and “UZ” designation on the right.

Type I5 plates marked “KON” will be designated for mining dump trucks and will follow a similar design. Letter codes such as “L,” “M,” and “O” will depend on the number of registered vehicles.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the number of trucks in the country has risen from 146,000 to 391,000 over the past 15 years, increasing road load and creating serious challenges for infrastructure sustainability. The ministry emphasizes that the new registration plates will help distinguish heavy vehicles in traffic and reduce road wear.

The draft resolution also introduces penalties for nighttime parking of trucks on road shoulders. In 2024 alone, such cases caused 113 traffic accidents, resulting in 47 fatalities.
