Uzbekistan Plans to Increase the Share of Renewable Energy to 54% by 2030

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan has announced a large-scale program to develop its electricity generation system through 2030. These plans are set out in the updated Uzbekistan–2030 Strategy, which has been submitted for public discussion on the SOVAZ platform.

According to the strategy, the country intends to expand renewable energy capacity to 35,000 MW by 2030. In 2026, 12.2 thousand MW are scheduled to be commissioned, followed by 14.2 thousand MW in 2027, 16.7 thousand MW in 2028, and 19.7 thousand MW in 2029. The implementation of these projects will increase the share of renewable generation in total energy consumption from 34.8% in 2026 to 54% by 2030.

The strategy also provides for the development of energy storage systems. Their capacity is expected to grow from 775 MWh in 2026 to 2,443 MWh by 2030, enabling greater stability of the power system and more efficient integration of renewable energy sources.

In the thermal power sector, the construction of high-efficiency generating capacities totaling 22,109 MW is planned. Thermal power plant capacity is projected to reach 18,551 MW in 2026, 19,811 MW in 2027, 21,133 MW in 2028, 21,805 MW in 2029, and 22,109 MW by 2030. In addition, the country plans to develop hydropower and pumped-storage power plants with a total capacity of 2,927 MW, starting from 68 MW in 2026 and gradually increasing to the full volume by 2030.

The strategy also includes measures to improve the efficiency of the energy system, including a reduction in losses in thermal networks from 37.6% in 2026 to 20% by 2030.

Earlier it was reported that Uzbekistan aims to increase total electricity generation to 124 billion kWh by 2030.
