Uzbekistan Launches New Phase of Cooperation with FAO in Greenhouse Vegetable Production

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture of Uzbekistan and with support from the Government of the Republic of Korea, has handed over two modern greenhouses to Ferghana State University as part of the “Smart Agriculture for the Next Generation” project.

The new facilities include a 100 m² seedling production greenhouse and a 284 m² model demonstration greenhouse. They are equipped with irrigation, cooling, and heating systems, mosquito nets, as well as modern shading and thermal insulation curtains. These greenhouses will serve as practical bases for student training, scientific research, and demonstration of climate-resilient vegetable production techniques.

The ceremonial event was attended by representatives from FAO headquarters in Rome, the Ferghana regional government, the regional agricultural department, university leadership and faculty, students, and project beneficiaries from Ferghana, Andijan, and Namangan regions. The program included welcome speeches, a symbolic ribbon-cutting, tours of the new greenhouses, and distribution of FAO methodological guides on sustainable vegetable production to students.

“These greenhouses have become a true laboratory for our researchers and students, where they can conduct experiments, implement innovations, and enhance Uzbekistan’s scientific potential in horticulture,” emphasized Kakhramon Davronov, Head of the Department of Horticulture and Viticulture at Ferghana State University.

The project holds significance not only for the academic environment but also for rural communities. The model greenhouses will be used to develop and test innovative vegetable cultivation methods, which will later be shared with local farmers. This collaboration between science, students, and practitioners directly contributes to strengthening food security and promoting sustainable agri-food systems.

FAO coordinator Guido Santtini noted, “What is remarkable here is the convergence of three generations — farmers who have dedicated their lives to vegetable cultivation, professors and researchers conducting studies, and students who are the future farmers and scientists. These greenhouses unite generations in the pursuit of a sustainable future.”

The handover of modern greenhouses marks an important step in the development of greenhouse vegetable production in Uzbekistan. The project combines advanced technology with educational potential, creating conditions to train a new generation of specialists who will actively implement innovations in agriculture and contribute to the country’s food security.
