Uzbekistan Launches Nationwide Measles Immunity Study
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan has launched a large-scale study aimed at assessing the population’s immunity to measles.
The project will cover seven regions of the country, as well as the capital, with a particular focus on children and women of reproductive age.
The preparatory phase is taking place from 25 to 27 March in Tashkent, including a training seminar for staff of the territorial branches of the sanitary-epidemiological service. The event is conducted with the participation of UNOPS and Integral Global. During the training, specialists discussed the study’s objectives, methodology, and key directions for the upcoming sero-epidemiological survey.
The main goal of the project is to determine the level of herd immunity to measles and assess the effectiveness of vaccination. The study will measure the presence of IgG antibodies against the measles virus, providing objective data on population protection.
The research will cover the Republic of Karakalpakstan, Kashkadarya, Namangan, Samarkand, Khorezm, and Tashkent regions, as well as the city of Tashkent. In each region, 14 medical institutions have been selected, with a total of approximately 4,900 participants. Participation is voluntary and based on a scientifically representative sample.
The results are expected to enable a more accurate assessment of the measles epidemiological situation in the country and guide additional preventive measures. This initiative represents an important step in strengthening Uzbekistan’s public health system and enhancing population resilience against potential infectious disease outbreaks.
